FDA Issues Class II Recall for NuNaturals Stevia and Monk Fruit Sweeteners Over Labeling Mix-Up

August 8, 2025 — United States:
NuNaturals Inc. has issued a nationwide voluntary recall of two of its popular sweetener products — Organic Pure Stevia and Pure Monk Fruit Sweetener — due to a serious labeling error that led to product misidentification. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has categorized the recall as Class II, its second-highest risk level.

What Happened?

According to the recall notice, 78 bottles of each product were affected:

  • Organic Pure Stevia – 1 oz.

    • UPC: 7 39223 00204 0

    • Lot Number: 2

    • Best By: April 2028

  • Pure Monk Fruit Sweetener – 0.71 oz.

    • UPC: 7 39223 00187 6

    • Lot Number: 2

    • Best By: April 2028

Both were sold in plastic bottles with white caps and were distributed nationwide. However, NuNaturals and the FDA have not listed specific retailers or outlets where these sweeteners were available for purchase.

Why Are These Sweeteners Being Recalled?

The issue stems from mislabeled packaging:

  • Monk fruit powder was incorrectly bottled and labeled as Organic Pure Stevia

  • Stevia powder was incorrectly labeled and sold as Pure Monk Fruit Sweetener

This mislabeling creates confusion for consumers with dietary needs or sensitivities and could lead to unexpected reactions.

What Does a Class II Recall Mean?

The FDA defines a Class II recall as a situation where use of the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences”, but the risk of serious health effects is remote.

While no injuries or health issues have been reported, the risk remains for consumers who may react adversely to an unexpected ingredient — especially those managing diabetes, allergies, or specific diet plans.

What Should You Do?

If you have purchased either of the recalled sweetener products:

  1. Stop using them immediately.

  2. Discard the product even if unopened.

  3. Monitor FDA and NuNaturals websites for potential refund or replacement announcements (none have been issued as of now).

You can also contact NuNaturals Inc. through their customer service portal for further clarification.

Bottom Line

If you purchased NuNaturals Organic Pure Stevia or Pure Monk Fruit Sweetener with the lot number 2 and best by April 2028, stop using them immediately. Although the health risk is considered low, mislabeling of food products can cause health disruptions and violates consumer safety standards.
